Rocheport Hauntings

 Ghosts of Rocheport, Missouri

 The Sad Room

If one drives east on Second Street in Rocheport, Missouri, and then comes to a stop at the intersection of Clark and Second, he might rightly get a case of the heebie-jeebies. Now take care when turning your head to the left in order to take in the full view of the old white house (under renovation now).  Calling it creepy would not be a misnomer, and tagging it downright spooky is as generous as one could be. I don't have much information as to the history and origins of the character of this edifice, but I have heard a few first-hand accounts about the dreaded cold room upstairs.

Apparently, there is a room upstairs, presumably on the second floor where the chill of not-this-world sends discomfort through the bones of any who enter.  If that weren't enough, one is incensed with the feeling of great sadness after entering the room.  Some have left the house only to be sobbing on the front porch. The wife of our reputable Mayor relayed a story to me a couple of years back very similar to the circumstance set forth above. Rocheport is a lovely destination, but all proper pioneer towns have their ghosts.

 The Knocking

Down on Central Street across 2nd street from the current post office in a building next to the fire station, one finds curious goings-on. In that shop, many employees and customers have heard a knocking or banging coming up from under the wooden floor particularly in the northwest corner of the establishment, and a desperate presence has been felt as well.

On one occasion, an employee of the former lamp shop came running out of the store, white as a ghost, so to speak. Needless to say, he wasn't very interested in returning to work after his experience. Having spoken with a local who grew up in Rocheport, I learned of young man, a teenager in fact, who had been working on electrical wiring beneath the floor in the northwest corner. With great sympathy to the family of this young man, an unfortunate occurrence befell him. Unfortunately, sometime in the late 1970's (date unsure), he succumbed to electrocution in that very spot.
